The Waterbury Ambulance Service is kicking off a new phase of a big project and is asking for help form the community to see it through. Fundraising for a new facility has been more than three years in the making. The new location is behind Yao's Deli Mart in Waterbury. Each year, Waterbury Ambulance Service responds to anywhere from 750-800 calls a year, and now, they're planning to call a new facility home next spring.Until then the Waterbury Ambulance Service will continue to work out of its building in Waterbury Center."This building was built by high school students in the 1980s; it doesn't have bedrooms, it doesn't have laundry, there's no showers," said Maggie Burke, executive director. "So, really, it's not the best space for us to be right now and it really doesn't adequately reflect the quality of the service that we're providing. So we're excited to find a new space that really meets our needs."In the meantime, the nonprofit is asking the community to continue to donate to the project."We've been fundraising for three years, we still have $1.4M to provide for this project to be completed, and we've raised $3.4 so far," Burke said. "We're moving forward, we're taking kind of a leap of faith in hopes that our community's going to support us and make sure that we get through the finish line of this project."Burke said another bonus of the new facility is that she hopes it will be an asset to help attract more staff and volunteers to the department."Overall, we're struggling with staffing; we're short-staffed," Burke said.
