I’ve made this recipe TWICE in the last two weeks. That’s how much I love thisSlow Cooker Carne Asada Recipe.♡

You guys have heard of Taco Tuesday, right?

Well, Trevor and I never actually remember to partake in Taco Tuesday ON Tuesday, so now we just call it Taco Night any time we have something that resembles a taco for dinner.

We started doing this a few weeks ago and what started out as ONE Taco Night. . . turned into two Taco Nights. . . then three. . . then. . .

Slow Cooker Carne Asada Recipe - 10 Minute Prep! (2)

You get the idea. We’ve been having lots of Taco Nights, but you guys, the thing is, how can you NOT have Taco Night when things like thisSlow Cooker Carne Asada exist?!

While it might not be 100% authentic (um I’m pretty sure carne asada isn’t typically cooked in a crockpot 😉 ), the flavors are totally spot on, it’s crazy quick and easy to throw together, the steak getsridiculously juicy and wonderful in the crockpot, and helloooo it’s a pretty darn healthy, well rounded meal!

Add that with corn tortillas + cotija (or lets be real, I just used crumble feta) + the BEST freshpico de gallo and you’ll be having Taco Night e.v.e.r.y. night.

Slow Cooker Carne Asada Recipe - 10 Minute Prep! (3)

You guys know that I’m typically not a steak eater. If I had to chose between a chicken breast and a burger, I’d pick the chicken breast 9 times outta 10.

Especially when I go out for Mexican food, hold the steak, and give me all those chicken nachos, chicken enchiladas, and chicken fajitas.

That being said, I can’t get enough of thisjuicy, steak-y Slow Cooker Carne Asada.

It all starts with beef and a flavor bomb spice rub.

What cut of beef is used for carne asada?

Today, we’re using flank steak. It’s affordable, it’s delicious, and it gets super tender in the crockpot.

Win. Win. Win!

What spices are in carne asada?

  • Smoked paprika
  • Cumin
  • Chili powder
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Dried Oregano

The spices gets whisked together with olive oil and then gets rubbed on the flank steak.

THEN, the spice rubbed steak cooks low and slow in the crockpot with freshly squeezed orange juice, lime juice, lemon juice, soy sauce (trust me), and vinegar.

How long does it take to cook carne asada?

6 hours! And you’ll come home to the most fabulous smelling kitchen and the most tender carne asada.

Plus, bonus, you making the spice rub, and juicing a few citrus fruits literally takes less than 10 minutes, so BOOM! You had dinner ready in less than 15 minutes!

Now, there are definitely two stars in this recipe: the steak (obvi) and the pico de gallo.

Slow Cooker Carne Asada Recipe - 10 Minute Prep! (4)Whatever you do, do NOT skip making your own pico de gallo. It’s SO easy and ohmygosh it adds so much texture and brightness to the steak.That’s. It.

Ridiculously juicy, perfectly spiced, amazing Slow Cooker Carne Asada✔️

Fresh, bright Pico de Gallo✔️

Now all that’s left is the assembly!

I love this with corn tortillas and a little sprinkle of cotija(orcrumbled feta if you’re keepin it real 😉 ), but the carne asada also makes for some fantastic hard shell tacos and quesadillas (with pepperjack cheese, of course). It’s up to you!

However you decide to serve this, thisSlow Cooker Carne Asada is so quick and easy to make, full of flavor, and is topped with the best, freshest pico de gallo!

Oh. And be warned, these are j.u.i.c.y. so this isn’t a great “first date” meal, unless you don’t mind juice running down your chin. 😉

FAQs

How long can carne asada stay in marinade? ›

Don't marinate much longer than 12 hours or the muscle fibers can break down and become mushy. Marinate long enough. I recommend marinating the carne asada for the maximum 12 hours.

Should I slice carne asada before cooking? ›

Make sure to slice the steak against the grain for the most tender carne asada.

How much liquid do you put in a slow cooker for steak? ›

Do you add water when cooking meat in a slow cooker? If your slow cooker is 3/4 full, no extra liquid is required. However, if you're cooking a smaller amount of food, add 1-2cm of liquid in the bottom of the slow cooker bowl to ensure there's enough liquid for cooking.

What cut of meat is used for carne asada tacos? ›

In Central and South America, we call pretty much any barbecued or grilled meat asado (or carne asada). The BEST cuts for the Mexican version of the dish we all know and love are either skirt steak or flank steak. Personally, I prefer skirt steak (pictured).

Is it better to marinate steak in the fridge or on the counter? ›

Always marinate foods in the refrigerator, not on the kitchen counter. Some older recipes call for marinating at room temperature. DO NOT FOLLOW THIS PRACTICE. Marinating at room temperature causes the meat to enter the “Danger Zone” (between 40°F and 140°F), where bacteria multiply fastest.

Can you keep uncooked marinated steak in the fridge for 7 days? ›

To enjoy marinated steak at its peak freshness, the USDA recommends cooking the steak between 6 and 24 hours after completing the marination. Unmarinated raw steak can last 3 to 5 days, but marinated meat may adopt a mushy texture when immersed in the marinade longer than the suggested time.

How do you make carne asada not chewy? ›

This is super hard, but a teensy bit of delayed gratification works wonders — let the grilled meat rest for about 5 minutes before slicing it very thinly, against the grain. You may need to cut your steak into thirds and then thinly slice across the grain for nice, never parallel to the grain.

Do you use white or yellow onions for carne asada? ›

Carne Asada Tacos, on the other hand, are usually served street taco-style, with corn tortillas, sliced beef, diced white onion, chopped cilantro, and a squeeze of fresh lime juice. Sometimes, they'll also have come with a side of guacamole. Bonus.

How to keep carne asada warm for a party? ›

Keep the meat warm in a heavy pot with a lid (you can also cook this dish in a pressure cooker if you wish).

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low? ›

The difference is the time it takes to reach that temperature. Low: 7-8 hours to reach the simmer point. High: 3-4 hours to reach the simmer point.

Should meat be submerged in liquid in slow cooker? ›

To keep a pot roast from drying out, your slow cooker needs liquid to create a moist environment, and that can include meat or vegetable stock, wine or water. This doesn't mean the meat should be submerged; a cup or two of liquid will be enough, since the cooker is covered and liquids stay trapped inside.

Can you put steak in a slow cooker raw? ›

Yes, you can add raw steak to a slow cooker to cook it to your desired doneness level. Slow cooking steak is a convenient way to cook steak over several hours, tenderizing it and adding exceptional flavor along the way.

How is carne asada supposed to be cooked? ›

Hit the grill!

“Asada” means grill, so you've got to grill your “carne” to make it true “carne asada.” If you don't have a gas grill or charcoal grill, use a grill pan. Our steak is usually done after about five minutes per side, but keep an eye on it and of course, consider what level of doneness you prefer.

What is the difference between Asado and Asada? ›

Carne asada is a spicy, marinated grilled steak that's cut into strips. This is the meat that goes into burritos and tacos. Pollo Asado – Pollo means “chicken” in Spanish, which means that pollo asado is grilled, marinated chicken. It's a delicious alternative to beef in burritos and tacos.

Is it OK to marinate meat for 4 days? ›

Most recipes for marinating meat and poultry recommend six hours up to 24 hours. It is safe to keep the food in the marinade longer, but after two days it is possible that the marinade can start to break down the fibers of the meat, causing it to become mushy.

How long can uncooked carne asada stay in the fridge? ›

Can you reuse marinade for carne asada? ›

Mar 22, 2023

If some of the marinade is to be used as a sauce on the cooked food, reserve a portion of the marinade before putting raw meat or poultry in it. However, if the marinade used on raw meat or poultry is to be reused, make sure to let it come to a boil first to destroy any harmful bacteria.
